The USC Libraries Scripter Award is a cool bit of kudos awarded every year to both the screenwriter of an adapted work and also to the original author of the existing text. This years finalists for are: Winter’s Bone, The Ghost Writer, 127 Hours, The Social Network, and True Grit.
Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini adapted Daniel Woodrell’s novel “Winter’s Bone”. The film’s writer and director, Roman Polanski, turned Robert Harris’s novel “The Ghost” into The Ghost Writer. Outdoorsman Aron Ralston’s autobiography “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” provided the real-life template for Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy’s 127 Hours. The Social Network was adapted by Aaron Sorkin from “The Accidental Billionaires; The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal” by Ben Mezrich. Finally, Charles Portis’ novel served as the basis for Joel and Ethan Coen’s True Grit.
The Scripter Award winner will be revealed on February 4, at which point we’ll be sure to let you know who snagged one.
